"Purple Daze" or "The best laid plans of mice, men and maniacal musicians"
The Slashtones have completed recording "Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody", the David Lee Roth cover of the Louis Prima classic for Versailles Records upcoming David Lee Roth tribute CD.
Harry Slash and Pam Purple
Mike Lewis and Arno Hecht
As previously reported, we'd planned to do an oddball multi-vocalist version of the tune, but due to scheduling conflicts, Joe Pecora of "Happy Anarchy", Frank Fortune of "Reckless Fortune", Joe Lynn Turner and several others were not available. What was originally planned was a campy version of the song with every singer imitating other singers. (ie:, Frank Fortune as "Axl Rose", JLT as "Elvis", ...) But what we ended up with was our own unique version of the song that pays homage to both David Lee Roth and the man himself, Louis Prima. We all feel that this just may be our best work to date! I wont go into singing our praises as the CD will be out soon and we'll let our work speak for itself. (I think i missed a spot patting myself on the back.)
The final Slashtones lineup on the tune was: Tony Moore: Bass, Lead Vocals & Backing Vocals - Harry Slash: Vocals & Backing Vocals - Roderick Kohn: All Guitars, Hammond Organ & Backing Vocals - Arno Hecht: All Saxophones & Backing Vocals - Steve Budgie Werner: Drums & Backing Vocals. Joining us on these sessions were former trumpet player for "The Buddy Rich Band", Mike Lewis and vocalist Pam Purple, who in our opinion, "stole the show" with her vocal solo.
Like our last project covering "Pretty Tied Up" by "Guns-N-Roses", where everone in the Slashtones played the Cowbell on the song, this time all band members sang on the tune.
The CD is titled "Just Like Paradise: A Millennium Tribute to Diamond David Lee Roth", and is due out in stores November 22nd, 2005 from Versailles Records.
