This was pretty much nothing more than a drunken jam band that didn't have a real name. It did spring forth the inspiration to make it a real band.

A one night failed experiment in futility at my nightclub. We "tried" to do The Slashtones' set in an improvised Jazz style with sax instead of guitar. It was not a pretty site to say the least, but the concept would resurface again...

This was supposed to be it. A one night joke band on my birthday. Billed as "The First & Last Appearance of Harry & The Slashtones", it was the start of many "last appearances" the band would make. Just like The Who and Terry Funk, we kept coming back, whether we wanted to or not...

We closed the Space At Chase with an unannounced and unplanned short set followed by the trashing of the stage so that we'd be the last band to ever perform there.

Harry Slash - Roderick Kohn - Steph. Bondy - Even Steven - Andy Bigan
We did another unannounced set at Danceteria without Brad, and with Andy Bigan filling in for Paul Sheehan while Paul was on the road.
The Slashtones were inactive due to legal reasons from July 1993 to March 1994. Paul Sheehan went on tour with Raging Slab. Roderick Kohn joined The Thunderclub Band. Steph. Bondy performed with Lara. Brad Rosen went to court a lot, but we can't talk about that...

Roderick Kohn had joined 'Thunderclub' during The Slashtones' hiatus and couldn't return to the band and Paul Sheehan had injured his knee while on tour with Raging Slab and couldn't play a full drum kit. I brought in Mike Lawler to fill in for Roderick Kohn, and brought in former 'Cult' drummer Lez Warner to play drums while Paul Sheehan temporarily switched to percussion. I added saxophonist Chuck Hancock to the band and he was would be a key ingredient in the band's forthcoming direction. Mickey Leigh guest appeared with the band in NY. This version of the band went from a Rock-Blues band to a more Jazz-Rock freestyle band. Even our straight forward cover tunes had a more Coltrain like vibe to them.

It was like I reformed the original band and added a whole other band. Roderick was done with his 'Thunderclub' shows and Paul's knee had healed enough to play a full drum kit, but I didn't want to get rid of Mike and Lez. I convinced the rest of the core band to give the "BIG Band" concept a try. We kept Mike and Lez brought in Mickey for the full set. I added Amy Wagman, (one of the old Space At Chase staff) as a backing vocalist and brought in Butch as the second harmonica player. 4 guitar players, 2 singers, 2, drummers, 2 harmonicas, bass, saxophone myself on kazoo. 12 people and way too many notes. It was very chaotic, but the band refined it's musical direction towards satire and comedy. We added 'Immigrant Horse' (Led Zep meets Mr. Ed), our version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" done in ala Carlos Santana meets Judas Priest and jazzed up version of "The Odd Couple Theme", (A one minute song that over the years would morph into very long improvised opening monologues about the various, never before heard of exploits of Felix and Oscar, depending on how many beers I had drank by that point in the set.) We attempted, and failed at creating a backing horn section of two harmonicas and a kazoo to follow Chuck's sax lines. While very funny and entertaining, it was a musical train wreck that got under the skin of some of the band members that preferred musical precision over musical chaos. The days of the "BIG Band" were numbered...

Mickey had to step down due to commitments with his band, "STOP". Lez Warner overslept and missed the bus...
We did one show with this line-up in NY at the RockRidge Sallon on Bleeker Street. When looking back on it years later, Roderick and I both agree that it was one of the best shows in the bands history in that it was everything a rock and roll show was ment to be. Energy, band synergy, and a great band to audiance interaction.

(September to November 1994)

The Slashtones were starting to catch a buzz within the music industry and we were getting many industry requests for a demo tape or CD. We all went into Steph. Bondy's "Studio D" recording studio to record the 15 or so songs we were playing live. The rest of the core band and I reached an agreement, they'd let me record tracks on this album with everyone we'd played with so far and some of our other friends, as long as I didn't try and put everyone on stage at the same time again. Myself, Steph. Bondy, Rod, Even and others would get together in the studio about twice to three times a week and lay down endless rhythm overdubs, guitar tracks and record new ideas. We only managed to record primary tracks of only about a third of our set during these sessions. We recorded tracks for 'Immigrant Horse', 'Green Haze'. The Odd Couple, 'Are U Confuzed', 'Bad To The Bunch' and 'My Hillbillies' from our live set, and created 'Rockin' Gorilla' that we'd start playing live. After six weeks in the studio, we took a break from recording to prepare for our upcoming shows.

We took a small step back this time. Several founding members of the band refused to deal with the chaos of the "Big Band" concept so we stripped down a bit. Brad, who was quite busy as our full time Attorney, voluntarily stepped down and left Butch as the sole harmonica player. Amy Wagman was about to start going for her teaching degree and was replaced by Lisa Anselmo as the second vocalist. We tried doing a more blues/rock set without a sax player, but it didn't quite cut it.

Arno Hecht of The Uptown Horns replaced Chuck Hancock on sax as a full band member, literally during a live show in New York on October 5th 1994. Our set was pushed back and Chuck had to split for another gig he was the main player at. Arno had dropped by the club after a gig and having never seen or even heard the band before, sat in for the entire 90 minute set of the Slashtones' bizarre, twisted arraignments and satirical cover songs.
Even Steven's back problems began to flare up.

Arno Hecht: alto, tenor, baritone and soprano saxophones - Steph. Bondy: guitar & backing vocals - Roderick Kohn: guitar - Harry Slash: vocals - Lisa Anselmo: vocals - Mike Lawler, Even Steven & Amy Wagman: backing vocals with Joe Lynn Turner: vocals
Arno in the band took things up a notch and it was back to the studio between gigs. We didn't record anything new, just added Arno's one man horn section to all our tracks and recorded most of the vocals. Joe Lynn Turner of Rainbow and Deep Purple joined us in the studio this time. Joe sang additional lead vocals on three tracks and arraigned all the backing vocals and harmonies for what we had recorded so far. Amy Wagman was brought back to record backing vocals.
